Separating photoblogs and ‘traditional’ blogs

Development — Senn on June 23, 2006 at 6:11 am

Greetings people!

As you may already have noticed, the recently updated page looks a bit ‘empty’ on days when photo bloggers blog simultaneously, in a short interval and in abundance. Even though we have a handful of flickr users listed at the moment, there appears to be a relatively large number of Maldivian flickr users. In all fairness we need to list them as Maldivian bloggers in mvblogosphere. However before we do, we need to tackle the aforementioned ‘problem’. What I have in mind is to separate photoblogs and traditional blogs, when presenting them on the recently updated page. To achieve this, database should be modified to include additional flag (may be something like is_photoblog) so that blogs listed as photoblogs can be ignored by the current parser. The ones listed as photoblogs should be parsed to a new one (which obviously we have to write) and generate thumbnails, store them locally (i.e. server), associate them with bloggers and put them on the right side of the main page. It is also highly likely that we need to modify the current schema to facilitate this requirement. The height and width of the thumbnails to be generated should be decided by visual designers (Shahee and Ayesh), if we have consensus on the matter.

I’ve created a static page to give you an idea of how it might look after bringing such a change. http://www.mvblogs.org/temp/mv.html. (Images used on this page are royalty free images)

The advantages we get by doing so are,

  • Separate ‘written’ blogs from photoblogs
  • Give more exposure to photographers?
  • Can you think of anything else…? :)

  1. Remember, any new features that are suggested should go into the roadmap for version 2. So i’ll keep this personally logged until further discussions breed on the development and design of the new version.

In the meantime, visual designers can begin work on the design and usability along with the new features for the new version.

[Added] Here is a list of features currently logged. Email me if any one has a good suggestion.

  2. thats a cool idea :)

i think you should fix this:
Some blogs have links starting with http:// while others have http://www, so when the blogs are listed Alphabetically blogs starting with ‘d’ comes to the end of the list.
so it would be good if u removed the ‘www’ from the links or add ‘www’ to all the links

  3. Diabolicaldevil: That’s actually the convention we follow when listing subdomains. The idea is to elimanate ‘www’ from subdomains since thats the widely used form of subdomains and may be considered the standard. (Although RFC 1034 doesn’t specifically restric the preceding ‘www’ infront of subdomains). Preceding ‘www’ is included in all the top-level domains, once again its considered the standard.

Alphabetically sorted list may not be so very alphabetical in this case, yeah. May be we remove that option or mention sublevel-domains are listed without the preceding ‘www’?

  4. Well then u could have the username/subdomain only there. when the username is clicked it shud follow the link of the blog.

  5. I am not very sure of concealing the URLs with names. Anyway lets see what others have to say about this.
