Little things…

Development — Shahee on January 18, 2006 at 11:08 pm

Good job everyone. I hope the logging of the development is helpful. Here are some of my suggestions.

>changing name of the rss xml file from on the header from latest.xml to mvblogs.xml. Also if possible add favicon.ico to it.

>changing name of the recentlyupdated file from lastupdated.php to recentlyupdated.php

>I think there was something wrong in the displaying of the line breaks of Dos’s romantic poem. Could it be something that needs to be tweaked?

>I thought the entries of the recently dated page were truncated to the nearest word. Anyway, as discussed on previous posts, it would look nicer to truncate to the nearest word and add something like […] at the end.

>the blog export page, is a very good idea, and would be great to make the task of the user as minimal as possible in the process of this. to do this, may be once the export is generated, show it on a page with the list of the selected feeds displayed (as on recently updated) and give an option as a link link marked as “subscribe to your feeds” or “RSS”, with the option to go back and edit the list… (this can be done even after launching). And after that probaly this also would need to be renamed from exportblogs to a more human name

>also, any documentation or the export blog page, and it’s functions are not yet visible on the dev blog.

>meanwhile i will tweak and add a bit more to the user interface, but it will be kept bare minimal.

  1. More comments on the design and features will lead to a better product. Ok, I have changes the RSS feed filename from latest.xml to mvblogs.xml sounds more relevant. The favicon.ico has been added to the channel information of the RSS feed.

The latestUpdated.php filename has been changed to recentlyUpdated.php. For the problem of line breaks being truncated, We have to come up with a good way to recognize if feeds have both the summary and the description fields. If we’re going to take the description field and leave it as is, but only truncating to our character limit, some html elements are going to break. For example it might be truncated between or within a link tag, or even an image tag.

One thing we can do is develop an intelligent content reader, which will parse the description of the feed items and pick which elements it will use and reconstruct a more favorable formatted entry body for each of it, for our recently updated page. Any suggestions? Simon? Jaa?.

I’ve added (…) the dots to the end of each description. One thing i don’t like about the design is the entry bodies being indented to the right. doesn’t look so good. Senn? Shahee?

  2. For the later part, I think me and senn decided to remove the left-padding (indent to right) from the entries. It would look better aligned to the left.

Would it be possible to use “Today” instead of “0 day ago” for the updated entries?

Also, the entry heading, can be turned to Black (a:link{color:black}), as in this blog. And can change color on mouse over as it happens now.

  3. I have fixed two of the design issues I mentioned on the above comment by moving the style properties to the external sheet and tweaking it a bit. But the “0 day ago” has to be fixed if possible.

  4. Re: (a:link{color:black}) on the links of recentlyUpdate.php

    > It looks okei to use black on the hyperlinked blog-entry title and the name of the blogger. I was thinking, would it be an issue (in terms of design) if the color: #4DAFEA; is used on clickable […]’s ? This color is ‘mouse-over’ color of the normal hyperlink.
